I use music in my massage therapy sessions, and my clients are welcome to bring music of their own to have played during their session. Perhaps you enjoyed the music you heard during your massage session and want to learn more about it, or you're just searching for some great relaxing music for your own use. I've included below a list of music I own that I use in my massage practice.
I highly recommend Stephen Halpern's music in general but this recording in particular. Halpern composes his music specifically to help you relax. It's effective either as background music or as music to actively listen to. I like to put the CD on repeat and play it for long periods.
Another nice CD from Stephen Halpern and the first recording of his I ever purchased to try out. The purchase of this recording led me to seek out more of his music.
This recording of Stephen Halpern's incorporates the sounds of the ocean along with his music and is very relaxing to listen to, especially in the heat of the summer.
If you're a classical music fan, I highly recommend this recording of Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1 through 3, Gnossienne No. 1 through 6 and Nocturne I through V, along with additional pieces. It's a gorgeous, peaceful recording.
It's difficult to describe this music but you can listen to a sample on Amazon. It was composed specifically for meditation and consists of two 30-minute-long pieces. According to Alternative Medicine Digest, "the musician combined sounds and melodies known to correspond with certain human brain waves and energies of the Earth itself, as established by modern geophysics."
This is a CD of impressionistic piano solos around the theme of the sea. All pieces are over 6 minutes in length, one as long as 20 minutes, so it makes for a great, uninterrupted music-listening experience.
This is a wonderful CD of meditative harp music. All pieces on the CD were composed by Amy Shreve. This is an older recording, from 1986, but well worth a listen. The subtitle on the CD describes this CD as "music for your personal retreat."
This is a really unusual recording due to the combination of instruments that come together to make music. Tony Scott plays the clarinet and he's joined by Shinichi Yuize on the koto and Hozan Yamamoto on the shakahachi. It is by far the oldest recording in my relaxing music collection. It was recorded in 1965.
This relaxing CD incorporates the sounds of the flute, an ancient 7 stringed zither and guitar. Like the Music for Zen Meditation CD just above, it is another 'east meets west' collaboration.
Carole Koenig plays the hammered dulcimer along with Carmen Dragon on concert harp, Candy Lerman on violin and viola, David Ocker on clarinet and Robert Shugold on flute. For classical music fans, this is a relaxing collection of pieces by Debussy, Ravel, Satie, Scott and Gershwin.
This is a great collection of Celtic music from harpist Carol Thompson. The music includes traditional Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English pieces and is refreshing and relaxing at the same time.
Here's a brief list of some other Stephen Halpern CDs that are terrific for relaxation:
